Well this article probably should have come out before the literal final weeks of the semester.
There are many clubs and organizations on campus, each vying for students’ time. Some have been mainstays for years, and others are brand-new. Each of them, however, provides something unique for the students who join them. And since this is my last opinion piece of the year, I figured I might as well pitch why joining The Grizzly could be for you.
Fun Pitch Meetings – The Grizzly, despite having a reasonable amount of responsibility due to articles being weekly, still finds time for fun. Our pitch meetings are highly unserious in. the best way possible. We joke, laugh, throw out unhinged article ideas (probably best some of those don’t see the light of day, like my Valentine’s Day ideas), and overall, have a great time. The pitch meetings typically last an hour; by the end of them, despite our best efforts, we still get article assignments.
Lower Stress Environment – Going along with the first one, we are seriously unserious: we will get work done, and well, but The Grizzly is not as much of a time commitment as some might imagine. It is possible to write a one-off article for opinions, features, etc., if you want to spread awareness about an event or issue. No matter if you are new to journalism, the team is willing and able to help you wherever you need. While you can certainly join full-time (more on that later), limited commitment is required!
Photography – If writing is not your thing, there are still spots open for you at The Grizzly! We are always looking for more photographers to take pictures for our articles.
Credits – If you want to be a full-time newspaper member, you can also earn credit for it! You get one credit per five articles across a semester, as well as credit for a certain number of pictures you take. Additionally, some majors like creative writing require you to get a credit from The Grizzly or The Lantern.
Doron Taussig – That is all.
Supportive – We have a very supportive staff that will work with you on deadlines, contact people for your assignments, or talk in general.
Interviews – My personal favorite part of the newspaper: you can interview faculty, staff, and students about their exploits and get a deeper understanding of what is going on around campus. It is always interesting to see what people are up to and know more about upcoming events.
I hope some of you reading consider The Grizzly for next semester! We would love to welcome new members!
