Bears’ Swim Teams Crush Conference Champs

Ursinus’s men’s and women’s swim teams came together this past weekend to compete in the Centennial Conference Championships. The meet wrapped up another amazing season of swimming, with an awesome performance from both teams. Let’s take a look at how this weekend went for our Bears in the pool. Ursinus racked up an incredible sixty-seven personal bests for our swimmers, along with 25 times that rank in the top 10 all-time in their swim here at Ursinus. There were also two school records broken, two swimmers with the chance to qualify for the NCAA championships through B cuts, and a Centennial Conference champion of our own. All of these accomplishments are notable, but having 67 swimmers have a personal best time is an especially commendable feat. It shows us how much effort all of our swimmers gave for their last weekend competition together of the season. Day one for the Bears featured a lot of great times and personal bests. But things really got rolling on Day 2, after Caelan Ladd ‘29 earned a first place f inish in the women’s 500 freestyle, in her first individual appearance at the conference championships. This was seemingly a spark for the rest of our swimmers, with the personal bests continuing to roll in. Alex Nicolai ‘29 contributed another impressive swim, winning the consolation final of the 500 freestyle. This momentum continued into day 3, with two school records being set, then broken again by the same swimmer during this session. Ladd set the record in the women’s 400 individual medley (or IM), only to break it later the same day. Then, Francesco D’Avella ‘26 took the record in men’s 100 breaststroke, a record that was already his, only to break it again later that day. While two school records were only taken, four record breaking swims were swam all on the same day, a tremendous achievement. All of these accolades and numbers are great to look at and talk about, but the one that stands out is 67 personal-bests. This displays something numbers cannot, which is how hard all of our swimmers swam for each other and how much they tried for one another. It’s important to highlight a team’s connection to one another, and how much they genuinely care not only for the sport, but for their fellow swimmers as a collective. This was an amazing weekend to finish another great season of Ursinus swimming. School records were set and competitions won, but mainly it was a weekend that highlighted the camaraderie of our Bears swimmers, as so many of them swam the best they ever had. Thank you Bears swimmers and coaches for another great season, we already can’t wait for next season!
