With a winning percentage of around .500 late in the 2025 Centennial Conference softball regular season, the Ursinus Bears are looking to finish off their season on a high note and make a late playoff push. With their next stretch of home games coming up on April 19, the Bears are currently in 4th place in the conference, right behind Muhlenberg College. Even though their overall record may not show it, the Bears on an individual level have shown plenty of success in the regular season so far.
Samatha Mallen ‘25 has led the offense for the Bears, leading the team with a batting average well over .400 at this point in the season in about 100 at-bats. Mallen also leads the team and is top 5 in the Centennial Conference in hits with over 50. Mallen has also been an on-base threat, stealing 35 bases in 37 attempts. Mallen’s best game of the regular season so far came against Dickinson in which she was 3-5 with an RBI single. On top of that, Mallen added to her stolen bases total, going 2-for-2 on the day.
In that doubleheader, the Bears beat up on the last place Red Devils, sweeping Dickinson College in both games on Saturday, 5-0 in game one and 6-1 in game 2 on the day. As mentioned, Mallen was 3-5 in game one, delivering the dagger in the 7th inning when she drove in Riley Cooney ‘26 with an RBI single to left field to make the score 5-0. Christa Andrusiewicz ‘26 had a very strong start, where she went 7 innings, allowed no runs, struck out 2, and allowed 6 hits to the Dickinson Red Devils.
In the second game of the double-header, the offense really showed out, led by Keelie Hancock ‘26, who hit a grand slam, her second home run of the year. Kayla Carr ‘26 also had herself a good day, going 1-4 and starting the scoring for the Bears with an RBI double to right center field. That scored Anna Evanchick ‘28. The early RBI by Carr was her team leading 34th on the year, and kept her on pace for 2nd place in the Centennial Conference in RBI’s.
Lucy Wolf ‘28 got her 7th win of the year on the mound in game 2 of the doubleheader, going 7 innings pitched, allowing only 3 hits, 1 run, and 2 free passes. Wolf also dealt the Dickinson College Red Devils 5 punch-outs on the day.
That start from Wolf cemented a great start to her first year at Ursinus College. Wolf, with the regular season coming to an end soon, has been one of the best pitchers in the entire Centennial Conference. She has a 2.29 ERA, the best ERA on the entire team and 5th place in the Centennial Conference. On top of that, Wolf, originally from Haverford, has 49 strikeouts on the year. She places 5th in the Centennial in strike-outs as well. Her great performance against Dickinson College comes just 3 days prior to a solid performance against the 1st place Swarthmore Garnet. In the loss, Wolf went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs, and had season-high 7 strikeouts on the 3rd best offense in the Conference in the Garnet.
The pitching from the Ursinus Bears has led the team to finish top 5 in pitching rankings in the conference, currently 4th place behind Haverford.
With just a few games left, Ursinus sits in an air-tight race for a Centennial Conference playoff berth. The Bears are going to have to scratch and claw to fend off Haverford, McDaniel, and Franklin & Marshall as they look to extend their season. But with a great core of key players, the sky’s the limit. Come support the Bears this Saturday as they take on Washington College!!
