Homecoming was already one of the largest events on Ursinus’s calendar. But what happens when you make it even bigger?
Ursinus College revamped their Homecoming weekend this year with the launch of “BearFest.” With the intention of streamlining annual events, BearFest combined Ursinus’s storied traditions of Family Weekend and Homecoming for one massive celebration, to positive reception.
BearFest began on October 15th with a bevy of activities, including talks with professors and alumni, an open practice with the Ursinus Gymnastics team, and the BearFest Welcome Party featuring music by Ursinus student musicians. Ursinus also welcomed back the class of 1976 for their 50th reunion.
The Saturday slate featured traditional Homecoming events like alumni games, food trucks, reunions, and, of course, multiple Ursinus athletic teams playing their Homecoming games. This year, however, saw the introduction of Bear Square, a showcase of student organizations and academic departments. Some other notable events included the Performing Arts Showcase, Cafe Nia, and the return of Homecoming Court — this time with gender-neutral “Homecoming Royalty” instead of the historic kings and queens.
When asked about the reason behind the changes, Ursinus President Gundolf Graml said “combining these things allows us to show campus at its best.” Graml was bullish on the possibility of the changes landing well with the community. It’s exciting to have our alumni back on campus and [have them] meet with current students and their families,”he said. “There are more opportunities for people to engage in things.”
The Grizzly asked some attendees for thoughts on the weekend, and here were some responses:
Question: What do you think of BearFest/Homecoming Weekend?
William Fries ‘76: “While we [the class of 1976] have had a splendid time and lovely dinner with the President, by far the best time I have had is interacting with the amazing students.”
Patricia Galop: “I love it so far. I love being able to discover things from the campus and meeting teachers!”
Mike Stackhouse: “I think this is wonderful! Great turnout, I can see the inspiration from the students and community; even through the chill!”
Nataly Torres-Mirron ‘28: “I think it’s chilly, but there is so great energy in the air! I saw alumni meeting up saying ‘it’s been so long!’ It was amazing!”
Wilson Hotchkiss ‘29: “Cold.”
Melissa Pound: “It is a lot. My dad is handicapped, so it was a lot. It was a bit easier last year, but I love the atmosphere!”
Alexis Vassilious: “I like it as a combined weekend. I would love to see it extended into Sunday, so the parents can community-build more! Maybe something could be arranged in terms of bulk hotel discounts. But there are so many more things to do! There is more Greek presence and more pop-outs!”
