The Ursinus men’s and women’s golf seasons are in full swing, and they are trying to finish up “on par.” The men teed off the season at the annual Ruckus tournament in Jamestown, Virginia, where they finished 10th out of 11 teams and earned a team score of 667 after two days on the course. The tournament was highlighted by Aiden Bonczek ‘28, who led the Bears with a two-round total of 159 (15-over par). The performance placed him 36th out of 59 golfers in the individual standings. The team followed up at the annual Spring Thaw in Delaware at the par-72 Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, facing off against 13 other schools from the area. On day 1, they had a solid showing on the course, earning a team score of 314. The score bested four other teams and placed them 9th for the day. Ursinus was led by first-year pairing Lucas Milliken and JP Hoban ‘29, who tied for 19th place, earning a score of 76 (4-over par) for the day. Hoban’s performance was highlighted by his six pars on the front nine, and three birdies on the back nine. Milliken also shined with his nine pars, birdie, and eagle, which earned him a collegiate-best score. Unfortunately, on day two the team was unable to match their scores from the day prior, scoring 326 and slipping to an 11th place finish at the tournament. Milliken and Hoban once again led the Bears with their individual scores of 80 (8-over par) and 82 (10over par), but it was not enough to keep them in the 9th place spot. The team will tee up again next week at the Centennial Conference Championships, where they’ll face off against some of their conference rivals for the f irst time this spring, and hope to end the season on a high. Over on the women’s side, the team has placed fourth in all three of their quad meets this season, most recently at Turtle Creek Golf Club for their quad against Dickinson, Eastern, and Stockton University. The team was led by McKenzi T hompson 27’, who tied for 10th out of 18 golfers and recorded a new season low of 101. Her pair of pars in the front nine at the seventh and ninth hole helped her edge out the seven golfers behind. Fellow teammate Peyton Fritz ‘26 also recorded a season low at the meet, tallying a score of 107 to finish 13th. Fritz scored back to back birdies at the par-4 15th, and par-3 16th holes, which helped her to improve her season best by three. The women’s team has been struggling this season largely due to the lack of numbers, having just three golfers on the roster. This decline in participation has sparked major concern for the future of the team, since the program requires at minimum three athletes, two of whom are graduating this spring. The ladies will wrap up their season at the annual Conquer the Island Tournament on April 22nd at Shawnee Golf Club, where they’ll tee off against seven other schools and hope to record more season lows.
