One of the most common occurrences in sports, injuries can often set back athletes and take a toll on their physical and mental health throughout recovery. Having to show up for practices and games you can’t partake in isn’t easy, and Emma Reinert ’27 is no stranger to this challenge.
Reinert transferred to Ursinus in her sophomore year, after playing field hockey at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. It wasn’t until this fall she decided to join the field hockey team here at Ursinus, but soon after, injuries set in, halting her progression on the team.
“It was nice being back and getting into the sport I know and love. The team culture is amazing, and everyone is always so supportive,” Reinert shared on her experience so far. After joining the team Reinert immediately jumped into gear, bringing her all to the field every time she stepped on it. Shortly after the semester started, however, Reinert faced a subluxation of her knee cap, causing a partial dislocation that built up in pain over time.
“It stinks that I haven’t been able to do much with my knee, but surgery is the next step in getting back,” she explained. Keeping a positive attitude through some of her hardest days and being surrounded by supportive teammates, has greatly improved her experience sitting out. “It’s been so nice having such an amazing group of people around!” she exclaimed.
It isn’t just her attitude keeping her going; Reinert has been active in rehab and staying up to date with her medical providers to recover as quickly, and as safely, as possible. “I’m going to work hard to try to get over the recovery as fast as I can. Field hockey is something I have known since I was five years old, so it will always be a part of my life,” Reinert detailed. While times haven’t always been joyful throughout an intense recovery, Reinert has spun her tragedy into motivation to get back on the field with her teammates. “I’m so grateful for another opportunity to get back to the sport! I will never take anything for granted!” she gushed.
For those struggling with injuries and setbacks, it can be difficult to remain optimistic about the future. One thing to take away from Reinert’s story is how despite not being able to take action on the field, she is taking action in her recovery, all the while being a constant supporter of her team.
