Sports Stars Shine at URPSYS

As the weather began to warm up in the heart of spring, the Floy Lewis Bakes Center heated up for Ursinus’ annual “URSPYS” awards. A night honoring Ursinus’ various athletes, the URSPYS were created two years ago to showcase the achievements of the school’s 24 different sports programs, while also sending off its seniors. Here were some of the highlights of the night, a lively commemoration of some spectacular seasons, and a celebration of the ones to come in 2025.

Morgan Coupe ‘26  kicked off the night by taking home the Mcintyre Award. The award is given to “a sophomore woman who, during her freshman and sophomore years, demonstrates initiative in financing her education, proficiency and perseverance in intercollegiate athletics and a cooperative and unselfish attitude in women’s sports.” Coupe finished with a 7-9 record over this season, 4-2 in her last 7, as the women’s tennis team improved to an 11-10 record this season.

The Olivia Sargeant Hamm Award came next, awarded to “a senior woman who exemplifies the best in college life; athletically, socially, and scholastically.” The award was given to women’s swimmer Katie Barlow. Barlow was a Philly All-SIDA Academic All-Area team swimmer this season, elected by fellow swim coaches across the area. She also battled back from illness to final in two relays for the Bears at this year’s Centennial Conference Championships.

The men’s and women’s “rookie of the year” awards were given to pole vaulter Mitchell Davis and wrestler Olivia Guy. Davis ‘28 broke the pole vault school record this season, gaining all-american honors and winning the conference in the event. Guy ‘25 became the fifth Bear in program history to qualify for national championships in her first year, finishing with a 24-11 record on the season.

Field Hockey’s Maeve Montgomery and football’s Connor Carter were the recipients of the men’s and women’s “Defensive Player of the Year” award. Montgomery ‘25 was the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year winner, with 6 defensive saves on the year. Carter ‘25 was named to D3football.com’s “All-Region Second Team”, 7th in NCAA Division 3 with 13.5 sacks.

The night’s “Outstanding Athlete Award” went to Tony Holden ‘25 and Chinwe Irondi ‘25. Holden was a D3football.com All-Region Second Team selection, along with the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He put up the third-most rushing yards in Ursinus history. Irondi led the Bears in scoring, a first team All-Conference and Second Team-All Region selection. She was also named Senior MVP.

The Men’s Athlete of the Year was Men’s Basketball’s Trevor Wall. Wall ‘25 was both an NABC All-District and a D3hoops.com all region selection. He led the conference in scoring.

Below are more of the spectacular awards from tonight’s action. Congrats to all of Ursinus’ student athletes on an incredible season, we’ve had a blast covering you here at The Grizzly. Good Luck to all of our seniors, and we look forward to seeing our student-athletes show out again this fall!
