The Yap with Emily Veasey

Hello readers! I’m so excited to start an ongoing column where we can talk all things fashion, love, and sex–and overall have a good place to yap. For my first article, and in the spirit of the season, I want to talk about Halloween, but more importantly, the costumes.

Since I was little, my favorite part of Halloween was not watching movies or eating various fall-inspired foods but dressing up. It was a time I could be anything I wanted, but I usually just became a Disney Princess. As I got older, I realized that dressing up for Halloween meant being anyone I wanted for the day, and I wouldn’t be judged for it. I could play a role, pretend to be so much different than I actually was, and get away with it; I feel confident enough that there are many other people on campus who feel the same way as I do.

That’s why I wanted to put together a list of costumes I think we may see a lot of this upcoming Halloweekend, and maybe give someone an idea for the costumes everyone definitely picked up and aren’t waiting last-minute to pick out (but no judgment here for that!).

The easiest way to predict what costumes will be in for any given year, that isn’t the habitual angel, devil, or any Disney character of choice that we see repeatedly, is to look at what’s popular in the media. I think one of the most popular and easiest to do for a duo costume is the Wicked Witch and Glinda for the upcoming Wicked movie coming to theaters in November. Another costume I could see becoming popular is from the movie The Substance, a horror movie released this past month. It is easy to dress up as the main character; just a hot pink 80s leotard and hot pink makeup, and you’re good to go!

Speaking of things that are hot to go, if you are a big music fan, might I suggest dressing up as Chappell Roan? She has enough performance outfits to fit the taste of her fans – and even people who might not know her music well. I’m a tad biased toward her “Red Wine Supernova” music video outfits, but that’s just me.

I think my biggest piece of advice would be to wear whatever makes you feel confident and happy! And who cares if other people might judge you for your costume? As long as it’s not hurting anyone, it’s nobody else’s business!

On the topic of not hurting anyone with your costume, I feel like we should talk about the costumes we SHOULDN’T be wearing. Let’s not wear anything that offends anyone’s political beliefs, religious beliefs, or the basic rights of human beings. And please, don’t be stupid and dress up like offensive figures—no one wants to see someone dressed up as P. Diddy this year. It’s just plain rude and disgusting! But to end things on a happier note, let’s have a fun Halloweekend this year! Let’s dress up in a way that makes us happy, whether that’s a single costume, couple, friend, or group. Have fun, be safe, and don’t let anybody ruin your fun :). Until next time!
