Nerf Club: A Merry Melee

The sounds of squeaky sneakers echoed through the dimly lit corridor, the building brimming with quiet tension. Competitors crept around the building, fighting for survival among their fellow classmates. Students turned upon students as darts flew across the war zone, a night of chaos and battle. But for Ursinus College’s Nerf Club, it was just another Friday night.

Nerf Club has been a staple at the college for years now, establishing itself as one of the premier clubs on campus. My visit to the club coincided with homecoming, making the meeting even more special. The club’s rich history was on display, as various alumni participated in the war of Nerf darts themselves, hiding in the various corners of Pfahler Hall, looking to strike. “It’s an incredible community,” one alumnus said, citing his “desire to come back year after year” in order to relish in the club’s activities. The passion for the club was obvious, as members ran through the halls with glee, racing around the facility to catch an unsuspecting peer. “It really allows us to let loose,” a club member exclaimed, amidst a high speed chase down the Pfahler second floor hallway. The palpable energy provided excitement all night, leading to an enjoyable experience for all.

When I envisioned a Nerf club, my initial thoughts were that of a competitive environment, with Nerf players battling each other for survival. However, the club immediately provided a different impression, providing a sense of fun-loving spirit rather than a cutthroat nature. The club’s participants were genial throughout the games, admitting when they were hit by a stray dart and supporting the remaining competitors in each game after their own elimination. “We try to keep it very casual,” emphasized club leader James Waring ‘24, focusing on creating a “fun and welcoming environment for all”.

Nerf Club’s fun continues to evolve, week after week. On the night I visited, the group was participating in “Humans vs. Zombies,” a somewhat complex variation of the Nerf game. Two teams broke out, one with Nerf guns and one without, with the “human” Nerf gun team attempting to stop the “zombies” from touching them by using their darts. Many variations of the Nerf gun game exist, allowing the club to mix it up and provide a unique experience each Friday night. No Friday night is ever the same as the last, creating lasting memories for all involved.

Through the joy it creates for its participants, Nerf Club was an exciting experience to witness. I encourage everyone to give the club a try, with a meeting this upcoming Friday November 1st at 7 PM!
