Yes, Ursinus Should Have a School Uniform*

Have you ever thought to yourself as you get dressed in the morning for class, “Wow, I wish I had a uniform so I didn’t have to pick out my outfit?” You’d be correct. Yeah, it’s nice to wear fun clothes, but wouldn’t it be easier to wear a uniform? I wore a uniform for 12 years (go Catholic school!), which made going to school so easy. I could roll out of bed 20 minutes before school started, throw my uniform on, and walk out the door. If we had them here, we could spend that time taking a nap or sleeping in even later before we go to class.

The uniform must be red and gold; perhaps the bear could be on there. We already have so many stressors with school – classes, activities, and homework. Why should we have to pick out outfits as another? We also wouldn’t worry if someone judged us on what we wore if we all wore the same thing. Think how much easier it would be!

This isn’t to say they can’t have fun with the uniforms. We can add fun hair accessories and interesting pins. We don’t have to go full Catholic school and ban anything fun. We also don’t have to enforce a strict shoe code. I would never make someone wear Sperry Shoes or Oxfords every day. I do think this should go into effect immediately. The faster we put it into place, the faster everyone could adapt to wearing it. Everyone I know who had to wear a uniform in high school said it was a quick adjustment for them, so we might have the same results when we implement them at Ursinus. Another reason why I think we should wear a uniform is to prepare for when we enter the workforce after graduating: Isn’t business attire like wearing a uniform? If we wear the same clothes every day, shouldn’t we be getting a head start on that now? And besides, why would we need individuality when we can assimilate into corporate America and move into collectivism?

Everyone might not agree with me, but if we sit and think about it, uniforms would be much better for all Ursinus Students. Until next time!
